THE FRIDAY MURDER

Benjamin Kuras

Genre: Drama
Cast: 2 men

Scotland Yard Inspector David Goldberg investigates the murder of a German tourist in London’s predominantly Jewish quarter Golders Green. As the murderer, an elderly Orthodox Jew, confesses, Goldberg’s Anglo-Jewish wit and sense of the absurd is stretched beyond credulity by the confusion of the murderer’s true identity (or identities) being, bit by bit, recovered (or hallucinated) from lost memory going back through the Holocaust.

First produced on stage at the Soho Poly Theatre in London in 1977 and subsequently transferred in a radio version to BBC World Service, a number of German Radio stations and  Israel Radio. Renewed and enlarged stage version had its Czech premiere in Prague in September 2013 to reviews praising it “the best on offer in the new season”, with ratings between 80 and 95.

The play is available also in English translation.
