After last year’s nomination of Kristina Dufková’s film Living Large (Život k sežřání), the animated film Tales from the Magic Garden (Pohádky po babičce) and the biographical drama Franz have also been nominated for European Film Awards. The winners of the 38th annual awards will be announced on January 17 in Berlin.

The film Tales from the Magic Garden was created in co-production between the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia and France. It can win in two categories – European Film and European Animated Feature Film. The story follows three siblings who come to visit their recently widowed and sad grandfather. Before falling asleep, Zuzanka decides to tell her siblings fairy tales, just as their beloved grandmother used to.

Four directors and 16 animators worked on the film for 457 days. It had its world premiere at the Berlinale Generation Kplus and was also screened at other major international festivals, such as the Annency International Animation Film Festival or the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Agnieszka Holland’s film Franz is also in the running for a prestigious award. Actor Idan Weiss, who plays the lead role of Franz Kafka, has been nominated in the European Actor category. His contenders in the category are for example Mads Mikkelsen, Toni Servillo or Stellan Skarsgård.
