The Czech Film and Television Academy has selected Waves, a period drama by the screenwriter and director Jiří Mádl, to compete for the prestigious 97th Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. The academy was deciding among 13 Czech feature films. Waves left behind Amerikánka and Mord.

The movie Waves reflects on the pivotal events of 1968 when the Warsaw Pact troops began occupying Czechoslovakia under the pretence of "a brotherly assistance”. The film is inspired by the true story of a group of journalists from the International Life Editorial Office of the Czechoslovak Radio and their determination to present independent news at any cost.

The worldwide premiere of Waves took place at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the film was officially released in cinemas on August 15. It has already been seen by more than 350,000 viewers.

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 2, 2025. The nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025 and the shortlist of 15 international films will be revealed as early as December 17, 2024.
