Pokorný, Jiří

Dramatist and theatre director. After studying direction at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy
of Performing Arts in Prague he moved to the Drama Studio in Ústí nad Labem, where from 1993 to 1997 he was artistic head. His productions and plays have been designated the first wave of „coolness“ in the Czech Republic. From 1998 to 2002 he was artistic head of the HaTheatre in Brno. Between 2002 and 2006 he was member of the group of artistic directors
of the Theatre On the Balustrade. In 1993, he went to Antwerp for a visit in the context of the educational Tempus exchange programme. In 1995, he was accepted for a playwriting programme at the Royal Court Summer School in London. Pokorny´s plays My Dad Takes the Goals and Rest in Peace won the Alfred Radok Award for best original Czech play in 1997 and 1998 respectively.
